How to Reach Kedarnath and Tungnath from Delhi

By Air: Delhi's IGI Airport is where this package begins. The nearest airport to the region itself is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport, about 5 hours from Guptkashi.

By Train: Delhi has multiple stations with regular connectivity; Haridwar and Rishikesh are the nearest railheads to the Kedarnath belt. Pickup for this package happens directly from Delhi, so a separate train booking isn't needed.

By Road: The drive runs via NH334 and NH58 through Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Rudraprayag — the full Delhi to Kedarnath distance works out to roughly 220 km to Haridwar and on from there, covered over a day and a half with an overnight halt.

Beyond the Temple: Places You'll Explore in Kedarnath and Tungnath

Adi Shankaracharya's own samadhi sits just behind the temple, easy to miss but historically significant. A short climb up leads to the Bhairavnath temple, dedicated to the shrine's guardian deity, with the best vantage point over the entire valley. On the trail itself, keep an eye out for Bhim Shila, the rock credited with diverting debris away from the temple during the 2013 floods.

If you have an extra day: Gandhi Sarovar (Chorabari Tal), about 3 km above the temple, is a quiet, often part-frozen lake named for the immersion of Gandhi's ashes here. Further on, at 8 km and 4,135 m, Vasuki Tal involves glacier crossings and suits only experienced, physically fit trekkers — it isn't part of the standard package.

On the way up: Guptkashi, your overnight halt, takes its name — "hidden Kashi" — from local legend, and offers your first real view of the Kedarnath range. A little further at Sonprayag, the Mandakini river meets the Son Ganga, and many pilgrims stop for a ritual dip here before the trek begins.

Tungnath and Chandrashila: The world's highest Shiva temple sits a short trek above Chopta and meadows. Those with energy to spare continue on to Chandrashila for a panorama that takes in Nanda Devi and the Chaukhamba range.

Kedarnath vs Tungnath Trek Difficulty

Registration for the Kedarnath Yatra is mandatory for every pilgrim and has to be completed before the trek begins — most travelers do this online in advance rather than at the counter on the day. Where to Stay: Hotels, GMVN Guest Houses and Tents

Accommodation on this route is functional, not luxurious — the altitude and short yatra season don't really allow for anything else.

At Kedarnath:

• GMVN guest houses run by the state tourism corporation are the most reliable option, usually on twin or triple sharing.
• Private hotels and lodges operate seasonally near the temple; quality varies, and a decent room runs approximately ₹1,500–3,000 a night in peak season
• Tents near the temple are a common choice too — roughly ₹800–1,500 per person including meals, and genuinely one of the better ways to experience the night sky at that altitude.

At Guptkashi and Phata: these are the main overnight halts before and after the trek. Guptkashi has the widest hotel selection; Phata is closer to the helipads if you're taking the helicopter route instead.

At Chopta: basic guesthouses or fixed alpine tents, open only during the season

Trekking shoes, woollen socks and gloves, a light raincoat, a warm jacket, a torch with spare battery, personal medication, original ID proof with photocopies (needed at registration checkpoints), and cash — ATMs are scarce past Guptkashi.
