You will see figures anywhere from 210 km to 250 km for this same route. There are two simple reasons. First, Rishikesh is a spread-out town — a site measuring from Laxman Jhula will show a different number than one measuring from ISBT or the main town centre. Second, at Srinagar and Rudraprayag there are minor route variations that add or shave off a few kilometres. Neither figure is “wrong” — they are just measured from a different point. For planning purposes, treat 210–225 km as your working figure from central Rishikesh.

Buses, like private cars, stop at Sonprayag — you will need to switch to a shared shuttle for the last 5 km to Gaurikund, and then begin the trek.
By Taxi / Cab
A private sedan or SUV taxi for this route typically costs ₹4,000–₹9,000 one-way, depending on vehicle type and season. If you are travelling solo or in a small group, a shared taxi (roughly ₹1,000–1,500 per seat) is a practical middle option.
One thing we have noticed from years of arranging this route for pilgrims: the return leg is where most independent travellers struggle, since finding an available cab back from Sonprayag during peak season is not always easy. A pre-arranged cab as part of a structured tour package removes this uncertainty — worth keeping in mind if you are travelling during the busier months.
Is There a Rishikesh to Kedarnath Train?
No. There is no direct train to Kedarnath, Gaurikund, or anywhere close to them — the mountain terrain simply has no rail line beyond Rishikesh. Rishikesh does have its own small railway station, but Haridwar Junction, about 24 km away, has far better long-distance rail connectivity.

The return covers the same 210–225 km road distance, taking roughly 7–8 hours. Most pilgrims do the 16 km descent from Kedarnath to Gaurikund on a separate day from the drive back, rather than trying to combine both — the descent, while shorter than the climb, still takes 4–5 hours and is easier to enjoy without rushing straight into a long drive afterward.
